Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategy director for communications has a challenging job. As the White House strategic communications advisor, Schlapp is faced with multiple challenges. A president can be his own communications director. Numerous legal issues which could impact messaging strategies. Cabinet Secretaries are involved in problems. Yet, through all of it Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission at hand, working closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. So far, Schlapp is focusing on safety at school problems, addiction infrastructure, and trade with the world. She does not interact much with the media in her job. In March, she garnered a lot of media attention when her name was mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a ideal position to be a White House strategist communications advisor. The White House's strategic communications adviser must deal with multiple legal disputes that could disrupt the messaging strategy of the administration as well as Cabinet secretaries that are embroiled in their own scandals. Schlapp has been keeping an eye at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop and broader communications. She has focused on topics such as school safety, opioids and infrastructure as well as trade. Her interactions with journalists aren't at all in her current role. In March, she gained a sudden burst media attention when it became it was reported that she would be an option to take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. There's been some tense fights. The allies of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh another contender for the job have been fighting over the media. Schlapp claimed that, following the time she learned that the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's character, she called Sayegh for a private conversation.
